| My good friend Diego Valesecci, who is currently staying with me in montreal, gave me a collection of photo's of him touring South America this spring, with his Fish and Mafia.
Here is a small sampling of those photo's, and the story in his own words:
RIO BAKER ,DIEGO VALSECCHI
SOLO HI WATER RUN MARCH 2005,
BIGGEST RIVER IN PATAGONIA ,3000 cc
NORTH ICE CAPE ,
20KM GORE , CLASS V++
BOAT: DRAGO ROSSI PLAY BOAT , FISH
Paddle a play boat solo on the baker probably is not the smart's thing to do ,
but some time you are in a good shape feeling your paddling very good ,
your friend don't want to run it , but you wanted to go any way , because
probably i was thinking that my experience is good enough , and when you get to the river ,
good vibes are waiting for you and you go for it ,
The rio Baker , has been run not that many times , some year's no body has run it , and there is another
solo run that is been than by francesco salbato
the trip has started in futaleufu after a great paddling sumer , the rio baker is 2 days south from futaleufu ,
is a long trip on the carretera austral in southern chile, to a little town , call puerto beltran ,
where you get the put in , at the end of the biggest lake in patagonia ,
logistic are not hard if you have a car , but i was hitch-hiking so wasn't that easy because no that many car's go around there,
Finally got to the river , and spend a full day hiking the first gore, scouting ,
the river was super hi , and the rapids just massive , wire pool's , boils, eddy lines ,, just crazy ,
the line of every rapid where changing every 30 seconds to a complete deferent line,
so took me a wile to figure that out , the river is super wide on the begin and become 40 meters wide on the canyon's the amount of water running thru there is pretty impressive us scary ,,
after two days i have done all the scouting and find out that I want to run every single rapid ,
I get my boat and off I go , wearing two life best and haven the paddle tight to my rest with a leash,
when I get to the first rapid and right above it a boil suck me in and change all my line,
but quick i got back on position , and from there on I didn't have any problem's ,
some of the waves where massive , haven seen anything like it before, the boil's move your line 10 to 20 meters in a few seconds, you have to be ready to surf the surface of the boils all the time ,
and been paddling a boat like the fish it make get me on control and keep the line more easy .
So the baker is a beautiful river, run it with your body's ....... solo is not that much fun,,,
