| Mavericks is THE WAVE of river waves. It's steep, its fast, its bouncy, and its very hard to surf, but boy is it a good time. Mistakes result in a beating... down time of 20 to 40 seconds is a regular occurance after a wipeout from the top of the lip, and you spend most of your ride just trying not to get your legs smashed out from under you.
But the lip forms up. it gets steep, curls and is hollow. Aggressive lip smashes are possible - ocean style - hard cutbacks, and even tube rides (though the tube is very mushy, and from the outside it looks like you're just getting your head bashed in by the falling lip... actually from the surfers perspective thats the way it feels too, but... you are "head ducking" into the curl and you can see out of it. This is my favorite wave of all time. This is a shot of Christine doing her best on mavericks. You can see the tube forming next to her right hand - you can lay back into that sometimes. |

| You can see here how thick that wave can get... and if you go over the falls right as it thickens up like this, you can expect some serious downtime (like... over half a miute). | ||||||||||
