Funboards
This "Fun Squashtail" came out of pure necessity to create a design that was neither a beginner board, nor an advanced board, but didn't have that slugish feeling of a generic fun shape, egg or mini malibu. The tail template is based strongly on a traditional Squashtail, while the tip is closer to a Fish shape. The centre of the board is thick, and that thickness is caried well towards the rail, so the crown is minimised, making a wide flat section for less able swimmers to use to maintail ballance, especially while swimming in tough currents and waves. However, the rail itself is small, and the foil is pulled back so it still turns really well off the tail, while the wide nose makes it one of the easiest boards to swim onto waves given its speed and performance once on the wave.

Ride it off the centre, it feels like a Fish. Ride it off the tail and it feels like a Squashtail. This is an awesome board for the rider whos skills are limited, but who is surfing ofeten and progressing quickly and needs a board to encourage this curve without getting frustrated.

This board was made for a rider who had leared to surf on river waves on the plastic Dragorossi Swallowtail, and was ready for the next step: a board that would still swim fast onto waves and across currents, but where stability for the rider while swimming was not necessary. She needed a board that would encourage her carving and basic riding, without the problem of having a board so small that swimming onto the waves became problematic.

This is essentially a Fish shape, with added flip tip so it'll run easilly over waves and currents, but still drive well off the centre and tail of the board. However, we put a flat tail on it rather than a traditional fish tail so the edge to edge would be smoother, and also the board would be stronger (the pointy fish tail is very fragile because of its shape).

The rider was also not willing to deal with the headache of waxing the board in our radically varying weather conditions, and so opted for a longboard style traction pad front and back. In all honesty, this seems to work pretty well.

This board I shaped for my surf partner, Andreanne. She started on a Swallowtail this April, and progressed so fast that within months she was ready for a performance board. The issue with where she surfs is that the wave is both hard to catch (very flat, and at the same time very fast), and it has some steep walled out sections, and some flat sections that tend to collapse and spit you out. So the board needed to swim onto waves well, and deal with the falt sections like a Fish, but at the same time she wanted a board that turned like a squashtail. The result is this board. The template resembles a Squahtail, but its width and foil are more like a Fish, and the rocker is an even curve with some extra flip tip to make it forgiving and easy to paddle through the rapids and onto the wave.

I also put FCS CRX curved fins on this so that it would turn like a small GL fin, without having the tendency to slide out like the GL's can do in power carves. Andreanne has been bouncing back and forth between Squashtails and Fish's for the last few months, and after one session, told me this was by far the best board she had ridden for her skill level, and the way she likes to surf. That's what I like to hear!

The rider this was for was an experienced boogie boarder, who had spent the last two years learning on a friends 6'6" Squashtail. He asked for a board that would swim easilly through the bigger rapids and onto the faster green waves, but still turn really well. He surfs a lot of different kinds of river waves, and wanted a board that would not be too tempremental, especially on the bouncy, airated waves of flooded springtime rivers.

We decided to make him a roundtail because of the smoothness of the ride offered by these, but keep the centre and nose pretty waide so it'd push itself onto waves more like a Fish. with exadurated flip tip, and a smooth rocker transition throughout the length of the board, and the tail rocker starting about 6" in front of the fin cluster, this board is super smooth in the most insane conditions. Steep waves, or super flat slow ones, this board glides over all of it. its one of the most versitile boards I've made, as its carving and air performance is also noteworthy.
