This tiny Squashtail was built for a 100lbs surfer who was an experienced ocean surfer, and was looking for extra strength and forgiveness in a performance board for river surfing on big fast river waves.
This Squashtail has a lot of flip-tip, but an otherwise fairly flat centre section, keeping it super fast, while still being fairly easy to paddle through waves, and across difficuld currents and whirlpools. Its epoxy 8oz glass construction made it very tough, and the radical template made it turn super fast on rail, whether ridden off the centre or the tail.

I built this board for myself as a performance board that would be "easy" to swim onto waves and across currents and through rapids. It's short so it its very manouverable in tight conditions, but its extra width gives me the necessary floatation I need when the waves go soft, or to maintain speed across flat sections.
I like the feel of Squashtails, which is why I opted for a wider Squash over a Fish. I also prefer the way they turn on the tail. This board has minimal rocker in the tail, and more subdued flip tip than a lot of the river boards I make. the foil is quite far back, and the center of the board has very little rocker in it.
Since making this, I have made a few copies (in various different constructions) for a few other people as it has been a favorite amongst those who have tried it.

This is a travel board - somethng that will pretty much opperate in any condition, anywhere well. It's a Squashtail rather than a Pintail Mini Travel Gun because I prefer the way Squashtails turn and handle, and the idea of the board is not necessarilly for places like the walled out spots of Indonesia, but rather for someone going to Costa Rica, Maui or Peru for the winter, and the board needs to handle a variety of conditions, from flat and small, to steep and fast, without being too much of a compromise.
The rocker is fairly continuous, with no defined breaks, as is the template. ail rocker is low so its fast on the wave, while the template helps make it very manouverable and easy to turn off the center or the tail. The adjustable fins make it possible to tailor the toe-in according to the situation - making it faster down the line, or easier to turn, as necessary.
The rail is very sharp in the tail, while all through the centre of the board is well rounded so there is nothing to catch in choppy or walled out conditions.

This board I shaped for a surfer who tried my carbon "Viagra" Squashtail and loved it. I made a few key changes to it for him, since he already has a "big" board (a 6'4" Hipsquash) that's fast and swims well.
I took out 1/8" of tail rocker to increase speed over flat sections, and shifted the foil back an inch to decrease the turning arc and hold in hard turns. I rounded the tail just a hair to make it smoother from edge to edge, and finally increased the tip rocker by 3/8" for better ollies onto the pile.
The board is lighter overall than the Carbon board, also making it more manouverable, but he wanted really strong rails (since this is what always breaks on river boards), which I beefed up with 15oz glass bias cloth. I've also found the Tommy Curan fins to be the best all purpose fin on river boards, offering a wide base for drive, but a low profile tip for easy release. They cost more, but they perform better than stock G3000 or G5's for our use.
